Expert tips to get your beauty routine ready for prom

A big night out, such as prom, is bound to be beauty-full! The starring makeup artist in our glam squad is Mally Roncal, known for dolling up celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Rihanna. We caught up with the stunning Roncal to talk tips and trends before your most glamorous night of the year!

Vervegirl: Is there a way to match your makeup to your dress without looking too coordinated?

Mally Roncal: While it’s not necessary to match your dress with your makeup, I don’t mind it being a little matchy-matchy. For example, a swipe of eyeliner that matches your dress can be great. I always like a red lip with a red dress, too.

VG: How can we nail a sun-kissed glow without the rays?

MR: My Mally Beauty Believable Bronzer is perfect for achieving a natural glow. First, lightly dust the bronzer all over your face with a powder brush. Next, apply the shimmer shade to your cheekbones, brow bones and tip of your nose. Finally, take the blush shade and apply it to the apple of your cheeks and across your nose.

VG: What are the on-trend makeup looks for prom?

MR: A lot of current makeup trends are also going to be the trendy makeup looks at prom. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of strobing this year. A classic red lip and smoky eye never goes out of style, so I expect that to be a continued trend, as well.

VG: What is strobing?

MR: Strobing is a highlighting trick that gives you the ultimate dewy glow. After applying foundation, apply an illuminator or a highlighter that is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone under your brow and your cheekbones in a “C” motion. This will lift your cheeks. Next, lightly dust the highlighter down the center of your nose, over your Cupid’s bow and at the center of your forehead.

VG: How can you make sure your makeup stays put until the last dance?

MR: Always use a primer before applying your makeup. Not only will it give you a smooth canvas to work with, it will help your makeup last longer, too. Also, when you are done applying your makeup, use a clear, matte, finishing product, such as my Evercolor Poreless Face Defender, to keep it bulletproof.

VG: What’s your favorite prom memory and what were you wearing?

MR: I’ve always been such a girly girl, so doing makeup before the prom, with all of my girlfriends, was so much fun. We made a party out of it and we had snacks and hung out. It made the whole day super special. Remember, this was the ‘80s so the look was a little different than it is now. I had SUPER big hair, dark eyes and red lips. I had a red satin strapless dress that had a mermaid tail, paired with red satin, dyed-to-match shoes and red satin gloves up to my biceps.
